DIY Christmas Snow Globes

Fun DIY Christmas Crafts and Projects

Snowglobes are a fun do-it-yourself project and make a great holiday decoration or gift. They can even be used as a centerpiece for your Christmas table. It is very easy to make your own snowglobe. Snowglobe kits are available in most major bookstores and simply require you to insert your own scene in a pre-made globe. You can also make a snowglobe out of materials that you could easily find around the house. It is a great activity for kids and families that requires little time.

Jar Snowglobes

Jar Snowglobes Homemade snowglobes are usually made as jar snowglobes. They are easy to make and don't require any chemicals or unsafe materials. You can put any type of scene you want inside your snowglobe. Just make sure that anything you put in your creation is water resistant and will not crumble or fade when immersed in liquid.

Supplies:

  • Clear jar with tight fitting lid
  • Glue, aquarium sealant or florist clay
  • Mineral oil, baby oil or water
  • Crushed egg shell or glitter
  • Decorations

Directions:

1. Create a Christmas scene with clay, play dough, ornaments or toys. There are innumerable ways to make your scene but make sure it will fit through the mouth of your jar and within the jar itself with room to spare.

2. Use glue, sealant or clay to secure your scene in the jar lid. Allow glue to dry firmly.

3. Fill the jar up to ½ inch from the top with liquid. The 'snow' will fall more gracefully in oil than it will in water. If you use water it should be cold because warm water will get cloudy. You can also add food coloring to the liquid to change the look of your snowglobe.

4. Add crushed egg shell for a realistic snow look. Add glitter for a magical look. You can also add a combination of the two for an original look.

5. Carefully set the lid with the secured scene onto the full jar and fasten it tightly. Applying glue or sealant on the rim of the lid will ensure that the snowglobe doesn't leak.

6. Decorate your jar with different objects to personalize your snowglobe.
